Today Cruelty Free International in Brazil achieved a huge breakthrough as Representative Izar’s Bill to ban all animal testing in Brazil on cosmetics passed the Assembly. The organisation has warmly congratulated Representative Izar and all the members of the Assembly who supported the Bill, as well as the President for responding to our petition and allowing an early vote on the Bill.

Cruelty Free International Brazil campaign manager, Frank Alarcon, says, “We congratulate the Assembly for passing this historical Bill to end the cruel use of animals in cosmetics testing. The support of hundreds of thousands of Brazilians made this possible and we’d like to thank everyone for helping in this campaign.”

The Bill now moves to the Senate, and Cruelty Free International will now be actively campaigning to see it successfully passed.

Key progress for Cruelty Free International’s campaign in Brazil to date include:

  • Winning written support from Brazil’s main party leaders urgently prioritising Federal Deputy Ricardo Izar’s (PSD - SP) Bill (6602/2013) which would end the use of animal testing for cosmetics products and their ingredients
  • With the support of Luisa Mell, collecting 188,000 signatures calling on the Government to end cosmetics testing on animals
  • Delivering our petition to the President of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies, Mr Henrique Eduardo Alves (PMDB), who promised to push Bill 6602/2012
  • Achieving a ban on animal testing for cosmetics in São Paulo
  • Supporting Senator Valdir Raupp’s (PMDB-RO) Bill (PLS 438/2013) which would stop cosmetics testing being classed as a scientific activity
