The Indian cosmetics and perfumery industry is campaigning for an end to legal confusion over regulations governing the sale of imported products in India. “We have taken up the matter with the Government that irrational demand and restrictive practices are not in the interest of consumers,” said Sanjay Trivedi, founder director of Indian Home & Personal Care Industry Association.
Trivedi was particularly concerned about inconsistent registration controls for personal care product retailers selling imported products imposed by state Government food and drugs administrations. “This leads to confusion in the minds of the (cosmetics and perfumery) importers,” he told Cosmetics Business. The process of marketing foreign products is already very elaborate and cumbersome, said Trivedi. “Foreign companies without a track record find it very difficult to get an entry into India, however if a brand is already registered in UK, for example, they can get registration without too much of a hassle.”
