PETA US has purchased stock in Revlon in a move that will allow the US branch of the animal rights organisation to attend annual meetings and submit resolutions calling for transparency in Revlon’s animal testing policies. PETA took this action in response to Revlon’s refusal to state whether it pays for animal tests in China, which the Chinese government requires for almost all cosmetics marketed in the country.
“Since Revlon won’t come clean to consumers, maybe it will answer to a shareholder,” says PETA UK associate director Mimi Bekhechi. “If the company is breaking its 1989 ban on poisoning animals, then PETA US will find out in the boardroom, if necessary, and shout it from the rooftop.”
Recently, following discussions with PETA US, Paul Mitchell and Urban Decay decided against marketing products in China as long as animal tests are required there. PETA added that scientists, partially funded by PETA US, are working with the Chinese government to have cruelty free cosmetics tests accepted in China, where the country’s approval of the first non-animal tests for cosmetics ingredients is pending.
