The European Commission has welcomed the results of a European Union (EU) funded research project has uncovered skin ageing processes that could be used in formulating cosmetics products. A Brussels note on the EURO3.6m (US$4.6M) Elast-age project said it has identified elements of skin cells that degrade during ageing and also defective genes that trigger this process.

In particular, the researchers assessed the ageing of elastic fibres within the skin. Their discoveries can be used to make tissue regeneration and elasticity inducing products, said Brussels: "Elast-age outcomes identified innovative markers, models and procedures.”
